Openhand Children's Home

Openhand Children's Home

The children’s home Openhand was situated in a slum in Nairobi. It was built by the Kenyan women named Alice Wanjiru Mukui and Jassie Njoki Gichuki from their own funds and opened on 21st of May 2003. The home is a privately run, so it has to rely on donations.

Now 26 children, whether they be babies or teenagers, have a new home.
Some children came to the home as new born babies found abandoned, others were left at their home by their parents. A few of them only know, where they were discovered, others only have a vague memory of their families – they all shares disappointment and sorrow about their fate.

Openhand Children’s home offers these children a caring, safe and reliable home, which provides them with food, cares about their health, strengthens their self-confidence and gives them a chance for better education. To summarize it gives the children a new life perspective.

However, the home was crowded and the children were confronted with the misery of the slum. A dream came true, when the financial resources were given to buy a piece of land and rebuild the hostel outside of Nairobi.

A new home for the orphans was built in 2012.
